Full course description
Online self-paced course runs for six weeks.
Interior design projects may involve totally new construction or the renovation, modernization, or refurbishment of an existing facility, space, or room. This course is intended for people who are considering a career in interior design. It provides a broad introduction to the profession and an overview of the education and requisite skills. The emphasis of this course is residential, a branch of interior design that typically includes specialties such as kitchens, bathrooms, home offices and custom furniture. Through class discussions and the completion of a Living Room Project, students explore a variety of essential design topics such as; the principles and elements of design, the use and application of color, space planning standards, and assembling furniture, materials, surfaces, textures, and color schemes. Key residential design resources such as manufacturers, showrooms, and suppliers are explored. Students shall be provided with details regarding the purchase of required drawing materials and supplies at the beginning of the course. Online learning students will participate in discussion forums with their fellow students and the instructor. Online learning students will need access to a computer (with audio capability such as speakers or headphones), scanner, and digital camera. Student projects are assembled in either PowerPoint (Windows operating system) or Keynote (Mac operating system) format.
How do the asynchronous self-paced online courses work?
Structure: There are video lectures and learning tutorials to watch each week, and one required weekly assignment to complete and post. Additionally, students interact with each other in the discussion forums where they respond to questions and each other’s work. Students have some flexibility on a weekly basis in terms of completing their studies. Students should expect due dates for assignments which require participation in the online course throughout the week.
Schedule: Courses are set up to run weekly. Check the course description for exact course dates and duration. Students typically have several due dates per week where they participate in a discussion forum and submit an assignment.
Time commitment: The time that you spend working on your online course will vary, based on completion of 6 assignments.
Relationship building: There are many ways in which students interact with their instructor and peers. Students discuss topics in the discussion board, where their instructor and peers provide insight, guidance, and feedback. Students and the instructor can also communicate through private assignment correspondence within the course site. The instructor also provides screen-capture video feedback on some assignments.
