Full course description
Online synchronous course runs for 6 weeks, meeting Wednesday evening from 6-9PM EST.
The role of an interior designer can be many-faceted requiring skills related to furniture and materials selection, color and lighting; and includes knowledge of life safety issues, accessibility, indoor air quality, flammability and fire resistance, durability, slip resistance and acoustical ratings. At the same time, there are also professional roles that are related to Interior Design but which may include more of a focus on a particular set of skills. These may include for instance, positions within the furniture industry or kitchen and bath industry; project management roles; or working in-house for a large organization.
This course is a studio course in which student learning is focused on an important particular aspect of an interior designer's role: the design process for creating a floor plan, including placement of furniture. This course requires no prior drafting or Interior Design experience.
Students will be given assignments related to preparing floor plans based on a given set of client requirements. Students' work will be discussed in class and each week's assignment will build upon the previous week, leading to more nuanced understandings. The course focuses on tools and techniques used by designers to address questions of principles and elements of interior design, including as used to consciously create spatial experiences. Students will prepare hand drawings to scale and gain a thorough understanding for how to quickly test out options as part of an iterative process to enable design improvements.
Materials: graph paper (¼” squares); tracing paper; 2H pencils; pencil sharpener and / or black fineline marker; eraser; white out; access to a copier/scanner
How do the LIVE VIA ZOOM online courses work?
Structure: Students interact live their instructor and fellow classmates during their scheduled sessions via zoom.
