Why do we create Museums and endeavor to have our own art collections? What are the historical precedents? This course traces the emergence of paintings and drawings as art forms along with the emergence of the art collector with a particular emphasis on this history as it pertains to New York. The course is designed as a practical guide to curating a collection of fine works, including selection, placement, budgeting and installing. The discussion showcases a multitude of works that are available for purchase, together with an insiders guide to the appropriate galleries and dealers, art fairs and auctions.
